Printing technique
Risography is a unique printing technique that combines elements of screen printing (serigraphy) and photocopying. It was originally developed in Japan in the 1980s as a cost-effective method for producing high-volume prints, but it has since gained popularity in the art and design world for its distinctive aesthetic. Indeed, this technique is widely used for creating zines, posters, art prints, and limited edition books, offering a distinctive, textured aesthetic that stands out from standard digital printing.
The artist
Haruka Aoki is a Japanese artist, poet, and illustrator currently based in Queens, New York. With a background shaped by frequent relocations due to their family’s global travels, they draw inspiration from both nature and the metaphysical world in their art. Aoki’s work is deeply introspective, exploring themes of healing, identity, and the human experience, often in the context of queer and inclusive narratives. They are the author and illustrator of the children’s book Fitting In, which teaches empathy and self-acceptance through a story about a square trying to find its place in a world of circles. Aoki’s work also often features characters navigating complex emotional and spiritual journeys, using wit and sincerity to engage audiences.
